Lelouch looks like a normal 17-year-old teenager living in Britannia and attending Ashford Academy. However, Lelouch is also one of the sons of the current Emperor of the Holy Britannia Empire, Charles zi Britannia, and the late Empress, Marianne Vie Britannia. This connection to the royal family makes him a potential heir to the throne and gives him the right to claim it.
In fact, Lelouch was a heir to throne until an unexpected assault to the Imperial Family main household left his mother dead and his sister Nunnally crippled. Lelouch confronted his father about this event and claimed he was involved in some way; a strong accusation to which Charles responded banishing him and his sister to Japan as political hostages.
Lelouch was sent to stay with the Kururugi family, where he first met Suzaku, a person who will play a key role in Lelouch’s plan to change the world. Contrary to what was expected, the boys became close friends. Unfortunately, the peace didn’t last long. Britannia soon developed weapons strong enough to attack Japan and once Japan lost the war, Lelouch realised he was no longer of use as a diplomatic tool. Fearing for his and his sister’s safety, he reached out to the Ashford family, who were friends of his mother, to hide their true identities.
The tragic events Lelouch experienced in his early life had a huge impact on him. He sought to find the truth behind his mother’s death as well as creating a world where someone like his sister would be accepted. Achieving those goals becomes much easier after meeting C.C., a mysterious girl who bestows upon Lelouch the power of Geass, which allows him to control other people’s actions. Under the identity of a masked revolutionary called Zero, Lelouch launches a campaign against all those who oppress the helpless. A campaign that will soon turn into a plan to free Japan from Britannia’s oppressive rule.
